Cruelty Free Makeup Look and Top Animal Friendly Brands and Products

IMG_4736

I’m back everyone! Sorry it’s been so long since I have posted, but work and life have gotten in the way as of late. I wanted my next post to be meaningful, and not just a summer makeup post (no worries, those will be coming!).

So with that, my best friend is in the process of going vegetarian and is transferring all of her makeup to cruelty free brands, which is something I would love to do as well soon. So I wanted to make a post about both high end and affordable brands who are CF (cruelty free)  and V (vegan), and some of my favorite products. I also created a full face makeup look. So, take your step to saving the fur children and read below.

PS, note that many parent brands for example L’Oreal, who tests on animals, own cruelty free brands such as NYX, so that could be an ethics issue for some. (I’ve put a * next to these brands) Doing research is key, and apps such as Cruelty Cutter, can help when shopping. Also, not all of my posts from here on out will feature only CF and V brands/products, but I am looking to make the shift over the next few months.

Cruelty Free Makeup Brands

*Look for the cruelty free label on most brand’s websites or in their about me/FAQ section.

**Additionally, I’ve only listed brands I personally have used below. I will be testing more brands soon.

img_2812img_2815

Hello lovelies; we are only a few days out from Valentine’s Day, or Valentine’s Day weekend, and I wanted to get a romantic makeup look up that also has a sexy edge. You can definitely interchange the lipstick for something nude if a flirty romantic vibe is more your thing, or you could change the brown eyeshadow I used to smoke this out with a black for a more sultry look. Whether you’re spending the day swapping candy hearts with your significant other or hitting the movie theatres to see a certain lust-filled movie (okay, it’s Fifty Shades Darker) with your girlfriends (or you’re doing both, because you should never forget about your girls!) this is the perfect Valentine’s Day Makeup. Read below for all the details.

What’s New at Ulta: Including Fiona Stiles Foundation

IMG_5409 (2)

Happy Easter/Passover everyone! I recently ordered some new items from Ulta and wanted to do a look with them/test them out. This post will not feature full reviews, I will let you know my initial thoughts, but if you guys would like those let me know if you’d like an in-depth review of any of these products. I will probably do a post about the Fiona Stiles Luminous Finish Foundation Concentrate which retails for $30 and can only be found at Ulta. Below are the products I picked up and this makeup look. Now dig into that Easter candy and get your makeup on!

So far I really like this; it isn’t over dewy but it gives a nice luminosity to the skin, and my highlight actually showed up! Believe it or not because I have freckles, I have a hard time getting that glisten from within glow that I so so envy. I also haven’t felt oily at all, I have pretty normal/dry skin but with luminous foundation I can feel a bit oily on my chin after a bit. I also think the shade Porcelain is a great match for my skin; fair foundations have been a bit dark as of late and can look warm on me, but this one is perfect. So, so far so good! I will give a full update after a few days of wear, that’s really the only way to give a solid review. I also may review the Tarte Maracuja Oil if you guys would like. I also picked that up in this haul, but haven’t tested it yet, it is on sale for $25 though!

I’ve been debating purchasing this palette since I saw its PR on temptalia.com. It’s got every color I love and gravitate towards, but I wasn’t super impressed with the other Too Faced Palette I own, the Stardust Palette. Needless to say, I’m already obsessed with this palette. It has stunning coopers, a show-stopping purple, and a light gold that you don’t see in many palettes. The matte crease shades are also to die over, and it has a great off-white to highlight the browbone. All the colors are pigments and blend like a dream, oh and did I mention it smells like peanut butter!? The only disappointment I have if there isn’t a shade named Fluff, because I love me some PB&F. Definitely pick this up, it’s limited edition! Too Faced Peanut Butter & Jelly Palette $36.

The NYX Ombre Blush in Strictly Chic was another win for me. I thought this product looked a bit gimmicky, but I saw Nicole Guerriero rave about the pigment in her February Favorites and I decided to test one out. This blush is a beautiful coral that is pigmented but not overly in your face. I just swirl the colors together and it’s a perfect pop of peach that blends easily. NYX Ombre Blush Strictly Chic $9.99.

Primer: Makeup Forever Step 1 Primer (sample size). I normally use a hydrating primer but I didn’t want to over-hydrate as I did a mask last night and tested a new foundation. I will try the Fiona Stiles foundation with my BECCA primer though!

Foundation: Fiona Stiles Luminous Foundation in Porcelain

Concealer: Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer in Fair/Neutral

Powder: Maybelline Master Fix Setting Powder

Brows: Colourpop Pencil and Brow Colour in Bangin’ Brunette. (all their brow products are currently sold out, but they’ve updated on social media they’ll be back soon!) Another affordable option is the NYX Micro Brow Pencil in Brunette. Used NYX Brow Mascara in Espresso to set.

Eyeshadows (all Too Faced Peanut Butter and Jelly Eye Shadow Collection)

  • Crease: Peanut Butter
  • Lid: Bananas
  • Outer V onto the outer lid: Peanut Brittle
  • Lower lashline: Jelly
  • Browbone: Extra Creamy

Liners: Jordana Cat Eyeliner in Black Leather on top and L’Oreal Silkissime in Black on waterline.

Mascara: L’Oreal Carbon Black Telescopic on top and bottom

False Lashes: Ardell Demi Wispies (Red packaging) with House of Lashes lash glue.

Blush: NYX Ombre Blush in Strictly Chic

Highlighter: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Champagne Pop on the bridge of my nose, cheekbones, above the brows and in the inner corner.

Lips: Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Magic Wand (review of these coming next!) topped with NYX Butter Gloss in Madeleine.

Setting Spray: Mac Fix+

Kiss-Proof Valentine’s Day Looks

IMG_3705IMG_3697 (1)

Hi beauties! If you’ve noticed something different about my page you would be correct; I changed the layout and URL for my blog, which you can now share with your friends as abeautycapsule.com! I’m super excited to take this step towards a newer look and feel. Anyway, today I’m here to recommend my favorite kiss-proof lipstick options, even if you are only kissing you pet this V-day like moi, haha. I also have two makeup looks, warning the red lip was NOT kiss proof, but I will give red lip options that are. I’m also going to give you some Valentine’s Day date night options; so all in all this is a jammed packed post. I would like to get a romantic halo smokey eye look up before V-day as well. But for now read on for some lovely looks.

Best Lipsticks for Smooching

*Disclaimer: These are what work best for me. Performance can change based on lip care, eating and drinking. For best wear time I apply a lip balm, let it sink in for a few minutes, then pat it off a bit and then I apply my liquid lipstick. Also, I find any high-pigment lipstick is going to have some transfer. To eliminate I’d pat with a tissue.

  • Reds
  • Pinks/Magentas
    • ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in More Better
    • OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Mina
    • Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks in Sad Girl
  • Nudes
    • OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Bel Air
    • Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Dolce
    • NYX Liquid Suede Lipstick in Soft Spoken (I’m obsessed with this for everyday)

Makeup Looks

Products:

Primer: Nivea Post Shave Balm for Sensitive Skin (you’ll understand once you watch Nikkie Tutorials explain here, and yes it really works!)

Foundation: Too Faced Born This Way in Porcelain, applied with the It Cosmetics Airbrush Buffing Foundation Brush

Concealer:  Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer in Fair Neutral, buffed out with a damp Real Techniques sponge

Powder: Maybelline FaceStudio Loose Powder

Brows: Sculpted with the Maybelline Brow Define and Fill Duo in Deep Brown (only use pencil side) then filled in with the Anastasia Dipbrow in Dark Brown. Set with NYX Brow Mascara in Espresso

Contour: Kat Von D Shade and Light Palette shade Sombre. Contoured nose and cheeks.

Eyeshadows:

Liners: Jordana Cat Eye Liner in Black Leather and L’Oreal Silkissime in Black on the waterline

Blush: ColourPop Between the Sheets

Highlighter: The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer

Lips:

1st lip: NYX Soft Spoken with NYX Ever Lip Pencil

2nd lip: L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte Gloss in Shanghai Scarlet (This is NOT a liquid lipstick). This color will transfer, but it does wear evenly, and does not bleed. But if you plan on kissing you partner, beware, unless you want to leave some kiss marks.

Star Wars Alien Inspired Makeup and Review of Star Wars Lipsticks by Covergirl

IMG_1333 Star Wars Makeup

Hello earthlings! I’m back today with an Alien/Star Wars inspired makeup look. This look was really easy to do and fast for any last-minute Halloween ideas. I’d grab a metallic jumpsuit or leggings and you’ll look like you spent a ton of effort even if it’s a last-minute costume. I was inspired by the new Star Wars The Force Awakens makeup line by Covergirl for this look. I picked up three lipsticks from the collection (that’s all the shades they had left at my Walgreens). They cost $8.99 each. I really wanted the gold color for my actual costume this year (hint it’s also Star Wars) but I haven’t had luck finding it yet. Hopefully this look inspires all your galactic dreaming this Halloween. Mini review, swatches, and detailed steps for this look are below.

Review:

Star Wars Force Awakens lipstick

covergirl lipstick

So I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of Covergirl products. Everyone has always raved about their mascara, but it’s not something that has ever worked for me. That said, I have liked when super star makeup artist, Pat McGrath, has collaborated with Covergirl’s lipstick lines, which she did for this collection. I will say if you are not a Star Wars fan I don’t think these are the best lipsticks for the money, except number 20. The lipsticks aren’t named, just numbered, and they are all a very satiny finish. Here’s an individual look at each.

  • Number 20: 20 is a silver-lilac that is actually pretty pigmented. It has an intense metallic finish, and I haven’t seen any other lipsticks like this color. I really think this is a unique shade to add to any collection.
  • Number 30: 30 is a satin red with a decent amount of sparkle. It’s not as deep as the tube looks but it is a pretty color for the holiday seasons if you like sparkle in your lipstick. I don’t mind it, but I do think there are a lot of drugstore options that I’d use before grabbing this.
  • Number 50: 50 is a metallic eggplant color, also with a satiny finish. I like this, but I prefer a more matte finish for a deep color like this.

Overall the lipsticks I bought are a good option for Halloween makeup, but not a must have for your collection. I’m curious how the silver and gold in the collection look. If I happen to come across them I’ll post a review here!

Getting Real: No Farewell Here

I’m taking a step back from the beauty and fashion banter (not for too long, as I know that’s what you’re all here for!) and going to get real for a moment. Although this blog was started for an Online Journalism class at my college, it has turned into much more. Beauty and fashion for me is an escape, as I’m sure it is for many of you. I am what my friends refer to as a stress monkey: I work, intern, commute and take full-time classes, and although it seems like I’m doing everything, sometimes it feels like it’s amounting to a whole lotta nothing but severe aggravation.

Writing used to be my out from my anxiety ridden daily routine, but I found myself losing time to write. This blog has forced my passion for writing back to the forefront, along with my equal love of beauty and fashion. I know many people view beauty and fashion as a materialistic, fame-hungry business (but really who doesn’t want to look like Amrezy!? by the way I don’t think she’s any of the above, only love for those girls), but seriously, beauty and fashion are an art and an escape. This hobby has connected me to people and taken me out of whatever hangry, pissed off at the world mood I’m in. I forget about the stress of work and school and just paint my face. I tell my friends that doing my makeup is relaxing, this is because it allows me to have fun and really pull the creativity out again. I’m hoping this blog does this for you, and with that I promise to keep bringing content and looks.

The future of this blog will have the standard fashion and beauty looks, more reviews and dupes and hopefully videoed makeup and fashion looks by me (but right now that lighting is damn expensive!). I also want to touch on escaping your reality through makeup and fashion while incorporating tips on how to deal with being an everyday college aged girl. So I hope you keep reading and we can write my story, and yours, together.
